Gear repairer and industrial sewing machinist, based in Ōtautahi, NZ.
Originally, the dream was to start an outdoor gear brand. Then I came to realise that there are more than enough new products being distributed around the world. Naturally, I was led to repairs as more and more people are turning towards a sustainable mindset.
The circular products came about after seeing how many rain jackets were being thrown into landfill because of minor flaws that “cost more to fix” than replacing the product. All that perfectly good material just going to waste. It may be deemed useless for its original purpose i.e. no longer waterproof. However, that doesn’t mean it can’t be used for a tote bag, bike bag, or whatever else you can dream up.
A bit about me…
Starting out life in Tāmaki Makaurau, I had the benefit of growing up around a creative family. Many things were homemade, if it was broken it got fixed, not thrown away. Like most kiwi kids, much of my core childhood memories also involve outdoor excursions. Owing some of the more precarious adventures to my dad. Having a maker’s attitude and a love for the outdoors engrained from a young age, I’ve naturally been led to working hands on in the outdoor gear industry.
After a stint of office work in my early 20’s I decided that wasn’t the place for me. I ended up landing a job as a trainee marine trimmer, making canvas covers and upholstery for boats.
I dove into the climbing scene at the age of 23 and haven’t parted with it since. As soon as I signed up to the local gym, I spent some time after work one day and used scraps to make a chalk bag. Soon after, I saw the potential for pack designs and everything just snowballed from there.
Two years down the track I found a job going at Twin Needle in Ōtautahi. One spontaneous move later, I started the job repairing outdoor gear. Here I was able to hone my skills and see what works and what doesn’t in regard to outdoor gear construction.
Since 2023 I’ve been working freelance, repairing, customising, and developing products. You can see some examples under the work tab. You can also head over to instagram to follow my projects in the workshop as well as some outdoor adventures.
